My MacBook was built in 2009 and currently runs on OS X 10.5.8 and I'd like to upgrade to Lion. I know I have to install Snow Leopard prior to upgrading to Lion but I can't find Snow Leopard available online for download. I found a few sites offering the free download but don't know if its a trustworthy site. Can anyone offer any solutions or recommendations?
Are there any easier alternatives to help me upgrade to Lion without purchasing Snow Leopard for $30? I'll buy it if needed but would rather download it instead of going to the mac store or waiting for the disk to ship. Thanks for any suggestions.
Mac Os X 10.6 1 Download Free
You do not need Snow Leopard to install Lion. You only need a blank disc and the Flash drive version of Lion, or a hard drive with no operating system to install it from the Flash drive version of Lion. And no, Snow Leopard is not available for download.
Snow Leopard was succeeded by OS X Lion (version 10.7) on July 20, 2011.[13] For several years, Apple continued to sell Snow Leopard at its online store for the benefit of users that required Snow Leopard in order to upgrade to later versions of OS X. Snow Leopard was the last version of Mac OS X to be distributed primarily through optical disc, as all further releases were mainly distributed through the Mac App Store introduced in the Snow Leopard 10.6.6 update.[14]
Apple strengthened Mac OS X by implementing stack protection, and sandboxing more Mac OS X components such as the H.264 decoder in QuickTime and browser plug-ins as a separate process in Safari.[57] Secure virtual memory was an option in earlier releases on Snow Leopard, but the checkbox to disable it was removed later. An anti-malware feature was also added to the system that alerts the user if malware is detected.[58] Mac OS X 10.6.8 added regular malware definition updates.[59]
The BBC reported that a bug in Mac OS X versions 10.6.0 and 10.6.1 which, in rare cases, caused loss of user account data after use of a previously existing guest account by users who had upgraded from a previous version of Mac OS X, received wide publicity.[78] The bug was fixed as of version 10.6.2.[79]
Former Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced Snow Leopard at WWDC on June 9, 2008,[80] and it was privately demonstrated to developers by Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Bertrand Serlet. On Monday, May 11, 2009, after build 10A354, Apple issued a code freeze on Snow Leopard's APIs.[81] The first public demonstration was given at WWDC 2009 by Serlet and Vice President of Mac OS Engineering, Craig Federighi.[80][82]
Note that it is recommended that you install OS on a clean drive. Next, you will need enough disk space available, for example, to create Recovery Partition. Here are some ideas to free up space on your drive:
Nevertheless, keep in mind that if you visit developer.apple.com/downloads, you can only find 10.3-10.6 OS X operating systems there. Newer versions are not available because starting Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.7, the App Store has become the only source of updating Apple OS versions.
The email edition comes with a special download code you can use for the Mac App Store. Note that to install the Lion or Mountain Lion, your Mac needs to be running Snow Leopard so that you can install the newer OS on top of it.
But as it often happens, workarounds are possible. There is still a chance to download the installation file if you have access to a Mac (or virtual machine) running that operating system. For example, to get an installer for Lion, you may ask a friend who has Lion-operated Mac or, once again, set up a virtual machine running Lion. Then you will need to prepare an external drive to download the installation file using OS X Utilities.
Before you do it, the best advice is to back your Mac up so your most important files stay intact. In addition to that, it makes sense to clean up your Mac from old system junk files and application leftovers. The easiest way to do it is to run CleanMyMac X on your computer (download it for free here).
If none of the options to get older OS X worked, pay a visit to the nearest local Apple Store. They should have image installations going back to OS Leopard and earlier. You can also ask for their assistance in creating a bootable USB drive with the installation file. So, here you are. We hope this article has helped you to download an old version of Mac OS X. For the first time since Mac OS 8.5 was released in October 1998, Apple left behind an entire processor architecture. In 1998, it left behind Motorola 6800 CPUs in favor of PowerPC (the first PPC Macs hawered been introduced in March 1994). With OS X 10.6, Apple left behind PowerPC CPUs in favor of Intel (the first Intel Macs were introduced in January 2006).
